ZOMBIE REVENGE

Zombies and madcap action

By WILLIAM BARKER

Zombie Revenge is another arcade to DC port, and the masters of action, the AM1 team at Sega, have converted this titled flawlessly. Not only that but in true gracious style they have opted to add a few more extras which make the deal that much sweeter. Let's get on with the carnage!

The story revolves around three hardcore nutters, who fight well and have great weapons knowledge. All you need for a game really. But that's not all, it seems a strange virus is changing many citizens and illegal immigrants alike into brain eating zombies, and wouldn't you know, you have to save the day.

The story actually takes place in the HOTD2 universe, and a young Goldman stars too. But the game is played more like the epochal Streets of Rage, or Final Fight games rather than a light gun style game. You stroll along, pick up some items and proceed to bludgeon hordes of enemies to death with them.

The view is usually isometric but changes to suit gameplay and for a change the camera angles are very appropriate. The graphics as usual are stunning, and when you see Mr. Stick continue to embed his rather large pneumatic drill into multiple zombies you may chuckle, or roll on the floor laughing until your spleen pops.

Having its roots connected to HOTD however means lots of guns and this is one of the coolest aspects of the game, the ability to wield numerous firearms and sharp objects. The minigun, laser, flamethrower, land mine, gasoline, handguns and shotguns are to name but a few, and if you've ever seen the Antonio movie "Desperado" then you're in for a real surprise halfway through the game.

There is one major drawback to all this fun, and boy this game is a lot of fun. Longevity. The game is fairly long but once you've beaten it you may let it rest for a while. You can enter the Streetfighter style mano e mano fights, increase your players stats and of course play the fishing games on your VMU, but the game just lacks a little in the longterm.

Probably the best rental game there is, you've got to try this game. Worth the purchase? Maybe if you love things with green blood and corny voice acting. Zombie Revenge is another top DC game, let down only by its replay factor. Try before you buy.
